Breast Health For Women with Intellectual Disabilities Teaching Manual

Oak Hill CRSE Breast Health Training Manual cover

This curriculum is designed to increase the comfort, awareness and skill of women with intellectual disabilities in relation to their own breast health.  In the accompanying PowerPoint presentation on CD-ROM, 3 women with disabilities act as role models to empower others to perform breast self-examinations, and to tolerate clinical breast exams and mammograms.

Care providers will find this curriculum essential to their commitment to best practice and quality improvement.  It includes valuable teaching strategies and laminated illustrations to augment learning.

"Reaching women with intellectual disabilities about breast health is essential yet often overlooked.  This teaching guide fills that gap in service and should be disseminated to all who work with this special population." - Pauline Kezer, President, Connecticut Affiliate, Susan G. Komen for the Cure

People whose lives have changed because of Oak Hill’s CRSE program –

breast health education

"It is such a good thing for clients to be able to participate in a breast health education class.  They don't get many opportunities to really go to classes that teach them something about themselves.  I feel very positive about it.  They are proud of themselves for going and participating and learning valuable information.  It is a great program and I look forward to more of our female clients having the chance to participate in breast health education classes."

- Cheryl Uzdarwin, RN, Allied Rehabilitation Center, Enfield

“The Presentation of ‘Relationship and Sexuality Education’ was well received and appreciated by parents and educators. Lucille and Debi covered the topic well, were very efficient presenting their topic light and non-offensive, yet strong enough to say what really needs to be addressed. The Curriculum certainly is needed and most unattainable for our special needs population. Its time is overdue. Thank you!”

"One group that I was very proud of worked on a definition of love over a period of several weeks.  They were able to come up with a definition that I think we could challenge anybody to try and come up with something better...and I don't think they could."

- Lucille Duguay, LCSW, director of Oak Hill Center for Relationship & Sexuality Education
