Serving People with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

Oak Hill meets the changing needs of society.

What are Autism Spectrum Disorders?

Oak tree seedling Autism (which includes Asperger's Syndrome) is a complex developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, although it is sometimes diagnosed much later. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills, social interaction, interests, imagination and activities and varies from person to person. The causes, symptoms, etiology, treatment, and other issues are controversial. Diagnosis typically comes from a complete patient history and physical and neurological evaluation.

Helping Build Better Lives

Dynavox communication device

A team of people including a speech/language pathologist, an occupational therapist and a special education teacher spent time in the NEAT Center at Oak Hill's Computer Lab.  This happens frequently with teams from school districts all over the state.  This time, it was a team working with a 12-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder, and the group included his mother.  Having everyone who works with the child together while the boy tried various types of equipment enabled them to discuss when and how each piece could be used in school and at home, an important connection for a child with significant needs.
